This album was recorded during Johnson’s debut performances at Jazz Alley in April 2024 with a full band, including the debut of Jake Sele on keyboards joining the band. ‘Live at Jazz Alley’ features many songs from the 2023 release ‘Jewels.’
Other album highlights include:
The debut of a jazz number written by Stephanie, accompanied only by Sele as they perform as a duo: “Come to Your Senses.”
A soul-spiced cover of “Blackbird,” taken after the style of Billy Preston
A long, extended version of “Georgia on My Mind” that starts off with Johnson and Sele, but slowly gets the rest of the band involved.
Tear-inducing story telling around the meanings behind songs like “Apology” and “American Blues,” followed by heartfelt performances of each song.
With this being a live album, you’ll hear lots of banter between songs that includes storytelling that is equally intimate and playful at times. And of course, what would a live album by Stephanie Anne Johnson be without including that contagious laugh heard at all live performances?
It’s all here!
